Identification of Culex sp. (Adult)


1. All adult mosquito have empodium. However, Culex have both the empodium and well developed pulvilli at the T5. (p/s: Coquilettidia did not have pulvilli which help to differentiate with Culex).

2. Abdomen is blunt.

3. All Culex (Culex)

  • Have white band at the center of the proboscis EXCEPT:
    • Culex hutchinsoni
    • Culex fuscocephale
      • The abdomen is all dark colour
    • Culex quinquefasciatus 
      • The tergite's abdomen have white base and dark apical
  • The thorax
    • Without bristles at mesopimeron, if present very weak (~ 1-3 bristles)
    • Broad and white scale at the sternumpleuron

  • Abdomen part:
    • the tergite have white base and dark apical





 4. Species of Culex:

  • Culex quinquefasciatus

no centre white band at the proboscis



  • Culex fuscocephale



No center white band at the tergite of the abdomen like Culex quinquifasciatus. The abdomen is all dark.




  • Culex gelidus - 2/3 of the sputum cover with white scale.

 Culex vishnui, Culex pseudovishnui, Culex gelidus, Culex tritaeniorhyncus - These Culex species have white band at the center of their proboscis.
